Separating Waste at Home

1 min read

Two or three containers in your kitchen make a real difference to how much waste ends up in the landfill.

Why Separate?

Mixed waste is hard to use. When food waste is mixed with plastic and glass, it cannot become clean compost and the plastic is too dirty to recycle. Separated waste can be composted or recovered, and less of it fills the landfill.

Organic (Wet) Waste

Vegetable and fruit peels, leftover food, tea leaves, flowers and garden leaves. Keep these in one container. This is the material that becomes compost.

Dry Recyclable Waste

Plastic bottles and bags, paper and cardboard, metal cans, glass bottles. Keep them as clean and dry as you can, and flatten boxes to save space.

Hazardous and Special Waste

Batteries, bulbs and tubes, expired medicines, syringes, paint and chemical containers. Keep them apart in a closed bag and tell the collection crew. Medical waste from hospitals and clinics is handled separately at a dedicated treatment facility.

Simple Habits

Rinse food containers before putting them with recyclables, do not burn waste at home, and never throw waste into drains or rivers.
