What Is an ISWM Landfill?
1 min read
Integrated solid waste management treats collection, recovery and disposal as one connected system, with the landfill as the last step.
ISWM ल्यान्डफिल भनेको के हो?
What "Integrated" Means
ISWM links every stage of waste: reducing and separating it at home, collecting it, recovering compost and recyclables, and only then safely disposing of what is left. The goal is to send as little as possible to the landfill.
Managed Landfill vs. Open Dump
An open dump is waste left in the open, which spreads smell, flies, smoke and pollution. A managed (sanitary) landfill places waste in prepared cells, spreads and compacts it in layers and covers it with soil, which limits smell, pests and scattering.
Recording What Comes In
At a managed site, incoming loads are recorded, for example at a weighbridge, so the city knows how much waste arrives and from where.
The Birgunj ISWM Center
N.K. International Management Pvt. Ltd. carries out the processing, operation and management of the ISWM landfill at Birgunj-16. It receives waste from Birgunj Metropolitan City and from Jitpur-Simara Sub-Metropolitan City, and weighbridge entries are kept separately for each.
How Residents Help
Every bag of separated organic and recyclable waste is a bag that does not need landfill space. Separating waste at home extends the life of the landfill.
